We have fielded hundreds of questions from vape space business owners and those who want to get into this industry. Here are the answers to your most common questions:

Q: How do I go about opening a vape shop?

We’ve found that most people who ask this question fall into one of three categories: curious, interested or committed:

If You’re: You Will: We Recommend Why?

Q: How do I start a vape shop — and how much will it cost?

A: We get this question all the time. We love helping people with an entrepreneurial spirit realize their dream of starting a vape shop! We wrote two special reports addressing this question, so please take a moment to read them.

We also can help you access financing if you need help getting your business off the ground. Please check out the financing page and the many other resources we’ve worked hard to pull together for new “vapreneurs!”

Q: What type of license or permit is required for me to open a vape shop?

A: As of Jan. 2015, the only permit you need is from the city where you open your shop. Most cities already have vape shops; those that don’t already have probably had others put in a request. Of course, some cities are easier to work with than others. Always check with your city before looking for locations or signing a lease. Even if there are vape shops in your chosen city, it doesn’t guarantee yours will be approved.

There is a right and a wrong way to approach your city and potential landlords and property managers. You have only one chance to make a good first impression. We’ve worked with cities all over the U.S. Contact us to better understand this process before you begin.

Q: I’m interested in selling my own brand of e-liquids. How should I get started?

A: Homemade e-liquids were acceptable not long ago, but the bar has been raised. So we highly suggest that you work with a contract manufacturer that is measuring up to the high standards that the FDA will be setting.

If you’re just getting started, we highly recommend you first understand all the complexities and best practices in branding, marketing and manufacturing e-liquids and enroll in a VAPE U course.

The quickest path to the e-liquid market is to work with our colleagues over at California Vaping Company. For more information, check out our page on starting an e-liquid line.

Q: There are a lot of vape shops in my area. Is it too late to get in?

A: Do your research. In our opinion, it’s not too late to get into a vape space business as long as you develop a unique selling proposition. In other words, check out the competition and create a value proposition that’s different or better than what’s currently out there.

We highly suggest you take a VAPE U course where you’ll learn how to develop your unique competitive position, and all the best practices in what successful vape shops are doing in their markets.

Q: What products should I carry and where do I get them? Do I need to get product from China?

A: Your first step is to do your research, study the market and carve out your competitive position and your target market (VAPE U can help you do this).

We highly recommend working with our colleagues over at VaporBeast. They have worked hard to develop good relationships with many vaping product suppliers and their customer service is second to none.
